= Manny Pacquiao II = Dominates Algieri

The great Manny Pacquiao did everything he could possibly do against Chris Algieri other than get a knockout in a one-sided thrashing to retain his welterweight world title.

Pacquiao, boxing's only eight-division titleholder, scored six knockdowns and dominated virtually every minute of the fight to win a lopsided unanimous decision before a sold-out crowd of 13,201 on Sunday at the Venetian Macao's Cotai Arena in Macau. Now the only question remaining in his legendary career is whether he will ever get fellow welterweight champion and pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. to agree to fight him after years of the biggest fight in boxing going unmade, mainly due to Mayweather's reluctance.

"The people deserve that fight. The fans deserve that fight," Pacquiao said at the post-fight news conference. "It's time to make that fight happen. It's been a long time. I want that fight. They're always denying the fight. I think the fight has to happen."

Coming into the fight with Algieri, there were many questioning where Pacquiao's once-devastating power had gone in recent years because, after a series of crushing knockouts as he moved up the scale, he had not scored one in eight consecutive fights since a 12th-round knockout of Miguel Cotto in November 2009 to win a welterweight title for the first time.

Make that nine in a row now, as the knockout drought continued despite Pacquiao's Hall of Fame trainer, Freddie Roach, predicting an early knockout, even saying at one point that it would be in the first round.

That didn't come close to happening, but Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) laid a beating on huge underdog Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs), a junior welterweight titlist who moved up to meet him at a catch weight of 144 pounds. The judges all had it by lopsided decision for Pacquiao, 120-102, 119-103 and 119-103. ESPN.com also had it a shutout for Pacquiao, 120-102.

"Yes. I am looking for a knockout but he is fast and moving, so it's hard to get Chris," Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao's speed advantage was obvious from the opening moments of the fight. He had an easy first round, landing a good straight left hand down the middle and momentarily wobbling Algieri with a right hook.

The 35-year-old Pacquiao, the icon of the Philippines, where he is also a congressman and professional basketball player and coach, connected with a right hook in the second round that began to swell Algieri's left eye. He also landed a left hand that forced Algieri back to a corner, where he slipped on a wet spot. It was ruled a knockdown by referee Geno Rodriguez.

Pacquiao was landing almost at will. He dished out punishment in the fourth round, landing a hard uppercut, lefts to the body and lefts to the head.

Algieri landed some decent straight right hands during the fight, but they had little on them. Algieri was also warned for a low blow in the fifth round.

"I knew he would come on strong," Algieri said. "I had a feeling he would try to blast me out of there just because I'm not used to the big stage. Manny is the best in the world at fighting like Manny Pacquiao. That's really what it is. His style, he has so much experience. He's perfected fighting like Manny Pacquiao.

"The plan was to get to the later rounds without taking too much damage, step up the pace and land shots that would hurt him. If the knockout came, it came. We weren't specifically looking for the knockout, but we were looking to put some damage on the guy."

He never did, and it was Pacquiao putting damage on him. He found his power in the sixth round, knocking Algieri down twice. First, it was a left hand that had Algieri stumbling and then hitting the deck. Then, Pacquiao landed a clean right hand on the chin for the second knockdown.

Pacquiao, who made more than $20 million, scored two more knockdowns in the ninth round, one on a blistering straight left hand that sent Algieri hard to the canvas.

"I sat down on a left hook and he caught me with a great shot," said Algieri, who made a career-high $1.675 million (a big raise from his last purse, then a career-high $100,000). "That was really the only shot that hurt me. I had my legs when I got up but I knew he would come with an onslaught."

Indeed, Pacquiao did come with an onslaught, dropping Algieri again moments later after a series of punches sent him to a knee.

In the 10th round, Pacquiao notched his sixth knockdown of the fight, dropping Algieri with a right hook-straight left combination.

Despite the shellacking, Algieri's trainer, Tim Lane, was talking oddly in the corner after the round, telling Algieri they had Pacquiao where they wanted him. He should have been thinking about stopping the fight.

Despite not getting a knockout, Pacquiao said his power is still there.

"We improved our strength, we do more training, we started early in our training camp so I was very confident I would win the fight, and I'm in shape," he said.

Pacquiao landed 229 of 669 punches (34 percent), according to CompuBox punch statistics, while Algieri connected on only 108 of 469 blows (23 percent), few of which had any serious snap on them.

"I did my best. Of course, I am satisfied with my performance," said Pacquiao, who retained his title for the first time since regaining it from Timothy Bradley Jr. in April in a rematch of Bradley's hugely controversial split decision win in 2012. "I came to fight. I did my best. I think that's enough."

Algieri had come out of nowhere in June to win a controversial split decision and a 140-pound world title from Ruslan Provodnikov as he survived two first-round knockdowns and a badly swollen right eye. Provodnikov was going to be Pacquiao's opponent, but when he lost, Algieri got the call.

Knockout or not, Algieri, 30, of Huntington, New York, gave Pacquiao credit for the way he fought. "It's not so much the punching power, to tell you the truth, it's how he mixes the punches up," said Algieri, a former kickboxer with a master's degree. "He has a very, very distinct and unique style that he has perfected. Manny Pacquiao is a hell of a fighter."

Yes, he is, but will he ever get Mayweather?

A few days before the fight, athletic apparel retailer Foot Locker released a humorous commercial featuring Pacquiao in which he riffs on the fight having not yet happened. At one point, Pacquiao misunderstands two other boxers in the gym and, believing they said Mayweather was going to fight him, Pacquiao begins to celebrate wildly in the ring and yells over and over, "He's going to fight me! He's going to fight me!"

There are signs that the fight is closer to happening than at any time since the original negotiations fell apart in early 2010. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum insists there are fruitful talks behind the scenes to bring together Showtime, which has Mayweather under contract, and HBO, which has a contract with Pacquiao, for a joint pay-per-view event.

"We're tired. Everywhere we go they ask when is it going to happen? When are they going to fight," Arum said. "I say enough is enough. Just make the fight happen. Let's get it done and let's get it done the next fight for each fighter, sometime in the first six months of next year."
Although Pacquiao is on board with the fight, and the networks might very well be able to make a deal, there has been no word from Mayweather, whose reluctance to face Pacquiao has been obvious for the past couple of years.

After the win against Algieri, HBO's Max Kellerman asked Pacquiao about the fight.
Pacquiao immediately launched into his commercial mode.
"He is going to fight me? Yes! Yes!" Pacquiao joked.
All joking aside, one can only hope Mayweather will face him. There is nothing left for either of them to prove, and no other fight the public wants from either.

After Manny Pacquiao Wins Again, Talk Turns to a Possible Foe

MACAU — It was shortly after 4:30 p.m. local time when Manny Pacquiao entered his suite atop the north tower of the Venetian Macao. Approximately 100 people were there, waiting almost three hours after his fight to congratulate him on his unanimous decision victory over Chris Algieri.

Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 knockouts) dominated the contest from the opening bell. He consistently landed power shots, particularly with his left hand, and knocked down the overmatched Algieri six times to retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight championship.

Perhaps the only disappointment for Pacquiao, 35, was that he again failed to register a knockout, extending a five-year drought. Pacquiao cited Algieri’s toughness as the reason he was unable to finish the bout early.

“I did my best, you know?” Pacquiao said. “I knocked him down many times, six times, and he still keep on fighting. So he’s a tough boxer.”

Algieri (20-1, eight knockouts), who displayed extreme confidence throughout the week, appeared crestfallen during the postfight news conference.

“This is not exactly how I expected to be up here,” Algieri, a native of Huntington, N.Y., said. “I expected to be 21-0 at this point. Very disappointed. But this is boxing. Manny Pacquiao is a great champion.”

Naturally, it was not long before the talk shifted to the possibility of a meeting between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Bob Arum, the chief executive of Top Rank Boxing, which promotes Pacquiao, said earlier in the week that he was close to striking a deal for the long-awaited matchup.

Pacquiao left no doubt as to his preference in the matter.

“The fans really deserve that fight,” he said.

Arum expressed frustration over the parties’ inability to reach an agreement.

“Speaking for Manny, for myself, we’re tired,” Arum said. “Every place we go, they ask us: ‘When is it going to happen? When is that fight going to be made?’ ”

He added: “Enough is enough. Let’s just make the fight happen. Let’s just get it done. And let’s get it done the next fight for each fighter.”

But with the victory over Algieri only a few hours old, Pacquiao was only going to dwell on the impasse with Mayweather so much. He joined the celebration in his suite, posing for photographs and signing autographs before his security detail escorted him to his bedroom for a bit of quiet time.

Other than a brief emergence for an interview with a television outlet from the Philippines, Pacquiao spent the next five and a half hours locked in his bedroom. A few of those closest to the boxer gained entrance, but the rest of those gathered to see Pacquiao were held outside.

Much of the crowd in the suite included people Pacquiao did not know. People like Ken Villaver, a boxing fan from Sydney. Villaver identified himself as an acquaintance of Justin Fortune, Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach, which earned him access to the suite.

Villaver was waiting for an opportunity to have his photograph taken with Pacquiao. He expressed amazement at the number of people there and the fact that an outsider like him could get so close.

“I’ve heard all the stories about Manny’s entourage, and how big it is,” Villaver said. “I can’t say I’m overly surprised, but man, it’s big.”

Also present at the postfight celebration were members of the Philippine Basketball Association team Kia Sorento, for whom Pacquiao is the head coach and a part-time player. The team won its first game of the season, in which Pacquiao participated, but has since lost six straight. Several players and coaches expressed gratitude that Pacquiao was scheduled to return for the team’s next game, Wednesday night.

“That’s why we haven’t won!” the assistant coach Chris Gavina said, jokingly.

There was plenty of time for such talk as hours passed with no hint of an appearance from Pacquiao. Just before 8 p.m., the trainer Freddie Roach and several of Pacquiao’s sparring partners were granted access to the fighter’s bedroom. A Bible study session commenced in the living room of the suite, with Pacquiao and a few of his V.I.P.s still tucked away.

About 10 p.m., Pacquiao, dressed in a white T-shirt and blue sweatpants, emerged to join the gathering. He took the microphone that had been set up at the front of the room, looked around at the 100 or so people congregated around him, and began to preach.

“I have no doubt, when I walk in the ring to fight, I’m 100 percent confident, because I am in the hands of God,” he said.

Throughout Pacquiao’s 20-minute sermon, keyboard music played softly in the background, and there were bursts of applause at regular intervals. He spoke in a mixture of English and his native Tagalog. His soliloquy was uninterrupted; his audience rapt.

At this moment, Mayweather, and boxing, seemed to be an afterthought. This was a solemn occasion, and Pacquiao was not going to trivialize it by invoking matters of sport. Still, those who were focused on such things could seize upon one line at the end of his sermon, and cite it as a reason for optimism.

“All things are possible,” he said.

And then he led the crowd in song.

1. Februari 2015 : Fifty Shades of Grey

 

“Mr. Grey will see you now” inilah kalimat yang tertulis pada poster film yang akan dirilis pada valentine day tahun depan. Bagi para penggemar novel E.L James, pasti tidak asing pada Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) miliarder tampan dengan masa lalu gelap yang berhasil mencuri perhatian Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) setelah sebuah Interview mendadak yang seharusnya dilakukan oleh teman serumah Ana, Kate Kavanagh (Eloise Mumford), dari situlah Ana menyadari masa lalu Christian dan kenyataan yang harus dihadapinya ketika semakin hari hubungan mereka semakin bertambah serius. Disutradarai oleh Sam Taylor-Johnson, Fifty Shades of Grey akan dirilis pada 13 Februari 2014.

2. Maret : The Fantastic Four

 

The Fantastic Four bukanlah film ketiga dari kedua film Fantastic Four terdahulu, melainkan re-boot dengan menggandeng sutradara baru Josh Trank (“Chronicle”). Bisa dipastikan Ioan Gruffud, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis dan Chris Evans tidak kembali memerankan keempat superhero dalam film ini (mengingat Evans juga terpilih menjadi pemeran pahlawan Marvel lainnya, Captain America). Belum ada informasi lebih lanjut mengenai aktor-aktor yang akan bermain, namun Alisson Williams (bintang serial televise HBO “Girls”) dan Michael B. Jordan (“Chronicle”, “Fruitvale Station”) dikabarkan telah melakukan audisi untuk peran kakak-adik Susan dan Johnny Storm (Invisible Woman dan Human Torch).

3. Cinderella

 

Kenneth Brannagh, aktor terkenal dari Inggris yang menggarap film ini sebagai sutradara, akan menggambarkan sisi gelap dari kisah yang diangkat dari dongeng legendaris tersebut. Sang Pangeran (diperankan aktor Game of Thrones, Richard Madden), harus menikahi seorang gadis pilihan kerajaan demi kepentingan politik. Sementara Cinderella (diperankan aktris Downtown Abbeydan Wrath of the Titans, Lily James) ingin segera melarikan diri dari ibu dan kedua saudara tirinya yang jahat, Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett) serta Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) dan Drizella (Sophie McShera), dengan bantuan seorang Ibu Peri (Helena Bonham Carter). Dalam film ini, Brannagh juga mengatakan akan menceritakan lebih dalam mengenai background story Cinderella. Dirilis 13 Maret 2015.

4. The Penguins of Madagascar


 

Kesuksesan trilogi animasi Madagascar menjadi alasan utama DreamWorks untuk terus melanjutkan petualangan para penghuni kebun binatang tersebut, kali ini dalam spin off The Penguins of Madagascar. Setelah pembuatan serial tv dengan judul yang sama sukses mencapai tiga season; para penguin jenius Skipper, Kowalski, Private, dan Rico akan kembali ke layar lebar. 5. Mei : The Avengers: Age of Ultron

 

Setelah mengalahkan Dewa Asgard Loki di film sebelumnya, kali ini para Avengers harus berhadapan dengan sebuah artificial intelligence bernama Ultron. Dalam komik Age of Ultron dikisahkan Ultron berupaya membunuh penciptanya, Dr. Henry Pym (yang juga seorang superhero bernama Ant-Man), dan membinasakan umat manusia. Akhirnya Ultron membuat sebuah android bernama Vision, yang turut menyerang para Avengers namun pada akhirnya bergabung dengan mereka untuk mengalahkan Ultron. Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, dan Cobie Smulders akan kembali memerankan The Avengers dan tim S.H.I.E.L.D. Sementara banyak rumor mengatakan Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“The Nowhere Boy”, “Kick-Ass”), Vin Diesel (“Fast and Furious”), dan Anthony Mackee (“The Hurt Locker”) akan memerankan Quicksilver, Vision, dan The Falcon dalam film ini. Dirilis 1 Mei 2015.

6. Juni : Assassin’s Creed



Fox dan Ubisoft telah mengumumkan bahwa video game RPG populer Assassin’s Creed akan diangkat ke layar lebar dengan tahun rilis 2015. Michael Fassbender (“Prometheus”, “X-Men: First Class”) dikabarkan akan memerankan Desmond Miles, meskipun belum ada pengumuman resmi dari pihak Fox. Skenario film ini akan digarap oleh seorang penulis asal Inggris, Michael Lesslie. Dirilis 19 Juni 2015.

7. Inside Out

 


Ditengah kesuksesan film-film animasinya yang lucu dan menghibur, kali ini Pixar akan kembali muncul dengan ide yang berbeda dari biasanya. “Inside Out”merupakan film animasi mengenai apa yang ada di dalam kepala seorang bocah perempuan berusia 11 tahun. Satu hal lagi yang menarik, karakter-karakter utama dalam film ini adalah berbagai macam emosi yang dimiliki oleh bocah tersebut (marah, sedih, bahagia, dsb.). Sutradara film “Up” dan “Monsters, Inc.”, Pete Docter, telah dikonfirmasi akan menggarap film ini. Dirilis 19 Juni 2015.

8. Terminator





Paramount Pictures mengumumkan, sang robot pembunuh Terminator akan kembali dihidupkan tahun 2015 ini. Film ini bukan merupakan sekuel dari serial terakhirnya, “Terminator: Salvation”, melainkan sebuah awal dari trilogi baru. Pencipta Terminator, James Cameron, akan kembali menuliskan karakter dalam film ini. Belum ada konfirmasi mengenai kembali atau tidaknya Arnold Schwarzenegger untuk memerankan tokoh robot legendaris tersebut. Dirilis 26 Juni 2015.

9. B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations








Film komedi animasi ini menceritakan tentang seorang hantu yang ‘kurang menyeramkan’, dan ditugaskan untuk menakut-nakuti manusia di sebuah sekolah. Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”) dan Seth Rogen (“Knocked Up”) akan meminjamkan suara mereka untuk karakter Watts dan Jackson Moss. Sementara sutradara film animasi “Igor”, Anthony Leondis, akan menyutradarai film ini. Dirilis 5 Juni 2015.

9. Juli : Independence Day 2




“Independence Day 2” (atau sebelumnya ditulis juga dengan judul “Independence Day Forever”) merupakan sekuel dari film sci-fi tahun 1996 yang menceritakan tentang serangan kapal alien di seluruh penjuru muka bumi. Kapal alien tersebut berhasil dihancurkan tepat saat hari kemerdekaan Amerika Serikat, tanggal 4 Juli. Roland Emmerich, yang juga menyutradarai film pendahulunya, mengumumkan akan menyutradarai sekuel ini. Jeff Goldblum dan Bill Pullman sudah dikonfirmasi akan kembali bermain dalam film ini, sementara Will Smith (kemungkinan besar) hanya akan hadir sebagai cameo. Dirilis 3 Juli 2015.

10. Pirates of the Caribbean 5



Johnny Depp akan kembali bertualang di lautan sebagai Kapten Jack Sparrow! Walt Disney Pictures telah mengumumkan tanggal rilis meskipun plot cerita belum bisa diungkapkan lebih jauh. Duo sutradara Norwegia, Joachim Ronning dan Espen Sandberg (yang sebelumnya bekerja sama dalam film “Bandidas”) telah dipilih untuk menyutradarai film ini. Dirilis 10 Juli 2015.

11. The Smurfs 3





Sony Pictures Animation dan Columbia Pictures telah mengumumkan film ketiga dari versi layar lebar “The Smurfs” sudah dalam tahap pengembangan script saat“The Smurfs 2” memulai produksi. Karey Kirkpatrick akan kembali menulis skenario film ini dibantu oleh Chris Poche (“Over the Hedge”). Dirilis 24 Juli 2015.


12. September : Hotel Transylvania 2




Satu lagi dari Sony Pictures Animation, sekuel film “Hotel Transylvania” telah diumumkan untuk dirilis pada tanggal 25 September 2015. Sayangnya, Genndy Tartakovsky, sutradara film sebelumnya, tidak akan kembali menggarap film ini karena sudah terikat kontrak untuk menyutradarai proyek film animasi Popeye, yang juga produksi Sony Pictures. Belum ada informasi lebih detail mengenai sekuel ini. Dirilis 25 September 2015.



13. November : Ant-Man




Sutradara Inggris Edgar Wright (“Shaun of the Dead”, “Hot Fuzz”, “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”) telah terpilih untuk mengarahkan film keluaran Marvel Studios ini. Ant-Man merupakan salah satu pahlawan dari Marvel universe yang merupakan ilmuwan jenius, dengan menciptakan alat untuk berkomunikasi dengan serangga. Belum ada pengumuman mengenai siapa yang akan memerankan Ant-Man, namun Wright dipastikan akan kembali bekerjasama dengan penulis Inggris Joe Cornish, yang dulu bertemu dalam pembuatan film komedi “Hot Fuzz”. Dirilis 6 November 2015.


14. Bond 24



Daniel Craig akan kembali memerankan agen rahasia James Bond dalam film lanjutan “Skyfall” ini. Sutradara dan penulis film pendahulunya, Sam Mendes dan John Logan juga sudah dikonfirmasi akan kembali, begitu juga dengan pemeran Q, Ben Wishaw. Dirilis 6 November 2015.

15. Peanuts



Komik legendaris Peanuts akan diangkat ke layar lebar oleh 20th Century Fox dan Blu Sky Studios. Steve Martino (“Horton Hears a Who!”, “Ice Age: Continental Drift”) telah dipilih untuk menyutradarai film animasi ini. Peanutsmerupakan karya dari Charles Schultz, dan diantaranya merupakan karakter-karakter terkenal, seperti Snoopy dan Charlie Brown. Dirilis 25 November 2015.

16. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 2)



Film ini merupakan penutup dari serial “The Hunger Games” yang telah dimulai pada tahun 2012. Jennifer Lawrence dan Josh Hutcherson sudah dikontrak resmi untuk memainkan dua tokoh utama, Katniss Everdeen dan Peeta Mellark, sampai film terakhir. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 2)” merupakan lanjutan dari film Mockingjay bagian pertama (dijadwalkan rilis 21 November 2014), di mana akhirnya Katniss dan Peeta bertarung dalam perang saudara negara Panem melawan pemerintahan otoriter Capitol. Dirilis 20 November 2015.

17. Finding Dory



Dalam sekuel “Finding Nemo” ini, si ikan pelupa, Dory (Ellen Degeneres), akan menjadi tokoh sentral. Film ini akan ber-setting setahun setelah peristiwa ditemukannya kembali Nemo (Alexander Gould), menceritakan bagaimana ikan amnesia ini bereuni dengan keluarganya. Belum ada informasi mengenai detail plot, namun sutradara “Finding Nemo” dan penulis trilogi “Toy Story”, Andrew Stanton, sudah dipastikan akan menyutradarai film animasi Pixar ini. Belum ada informasi lebih detail mengenai sekuel “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” ini, namun Matthew Gray Gubler, Justin Long, dan Amy Poehler sudah dikonfirmasi untuk kembali meminjamkan suara mereka sebagai para tupai kecil yang pandai bernyanyi, Simon, Alvin, dan Eleanor. Jason Lee juga akan kembali memerankan Dave, sang pemilik para tupai. Dirilis 11 Desember 2015

19. Kung-Fu Panda 3



Untuk film ketiga franchise “Kung Fu Panda”, DreamWorks bekerjasama dengan Oriental DreamWorks dengan proses pembuatan yang akan dilangsungkan di China. Jennifer Yuh akan kembali duduk di kursi sutradara. Pengisi suara yang dikonfirmasi akan kembali antara lain Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, dan Seth Rogen; sementara Rebel Wilson (“Pitch Perfect”), Bryan Cranston (aktor serial tv “Breaking Bad”), dan Mads Mikkelsen (“Casino Royale”) akan memerankan beberapa tokoh baru. 20. Inferno



“Inferno” merupakan novel terbaru karya penulis Dan Brown yang alur ceritanya diinspirasi oleh penulis abad ke-14 Dante Allegheri, dan akan diadaptasikan ke layar lebar pada akhir tahun 2015. Tom Hanks, pemeran Robert Langdon di dua film sebelumnya, “The Da Vinci Code” dan “Angels & Demons” akan menjadi aktor utama, sementara sutradara Ron Howard juga akan kembali mengarahkan film ini. Dirilis 18 Desember 2015.
